As a Nutrition Coach, I am writing to emphasize the importance of nutrition and the reasons why we should focus on it. 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠. It provides the necessary nutrients that our bodies need to function properly, including vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
There are several reasons why we should focus on nutrition!
First and foremost, it helps to prevent and manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Eating a healthy and balanced diet can reduce the risk of developing these diseases and improve our quality of life. We should start choosing whole food options and less processed foods packed with sodium, fat, and sugar. A simple way to start this is by reshaping your plate using the plate method!
What is the plate method? It’s 1/2 plate of vegetables, 1/4 plate of lean protein, 1/4 plate of starchy carbs, and a small dose of healthy fat.
Second, good nutrition is essential for maintaining a healthy weight. Consuming a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can help us to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of obesity. Pairing each meal and snack with all 3 of these macronutrients will keep you fuller and longer!
Third, proper nutrition can improve our mental health and cognitive function. Studies have shown that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids can improve mood and reduce the risk of depression and anxiety.
And lastly, we want to limit the number of processed carbs and sugar. The AHA recommends no more than 6 teaspoons (about 24 g) for women and 9 for men (about 36 g). The average person consumes over 150 pounds of sugar per year – 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 46 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘺! (about 160+ g) It’s not surprising – sugar is super addicting and feels hidden in almost every food product you find in a package.
Overall, it is essential to focus on nutrition and make healthy food choices to promote good health and prevent chronic diseases. By incorporating a balanced and varied diet into our lifestyles, we can ensure that our bodies receive the nutrients they need to function properly and maintain optimal health.
